The 5th Belt and Road Women’s Forum successfully convened in Sanya, Hainan from December 6-8. Co-hosted by the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, the All-China Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese, and the UN Resident Coordinator Office in China, and jointly organized by the People’s Government of Sanya City, the China Friendship Foundation for Peace and Development, and the Secretariat of the Belt and Road Women’s Forum. On the morning of the 8th, the Belt and Road Women's Forum and Youth Leadership Forum was successfully held in Sanya Yazhou Bay Science and Technology City. Wang Dianjun, Principal of Tsinghua International School Daoxiang Lake, attended the Belt and Road Women’s Forum and Youth Leadership Forum and delivered a speech.
Thank you, everyone! Today, I wish to convey a simple yet profound principle. We often view this as a youth forum, where the leadership of youth determines the future of the world and the fate of nations. However, as we all know, today’s youth were once children. Without strong children, there can be no strong youth. To ensure that youth can lead the world, we must first properly nurture our children. As the former principal of Tsinghua University High School, I have always emphasized the importance of international understanding and global awareness in youth education.
I firmly believe that China and other countries should place greater emphasis on education that fosters international understanding. Why is this crucial? It’s because understanding leads to mutual tolerance and respect, which are essential for harmonious coexistence. In China, the focus has often been on academic education, neglecting the cultivation of a global perspective and international outlook. At a national level, policies and development strategies call for attention to international understanding in education. However, in practice, this aspect is often overlooked as it is not a part of college entrance examinations and depends largely on the vision of school principals and teachers.
At the school I managed, we emphasized education in international understanding, aligning with the Party’s concept of building a community with a shared future for mankind. Lack of international understanding and global governance capabilities renders governance efforts ineffective.
We have implemented various policies to emphasize international education alongside local education. The whole system stresses international understanding, but it is easy to overlook.
How do we develop this? By organizing activities and study tours, facilitating international exchanges, inviting foreign teachers to share their culture and unique characteristics, and fostering mutual understanding, respect, and tolerance among students. This approach must be integrated into the curriculum and activities, as international understanding doesn’t just happen spontaneously.
The essence of global education and the concept of a global citizen lies in understanding and empathy, fostering mutual respect, and celebrating diversity. While China’s core educational competencies include national education, the prevalent practice of teaching and learning solely for exams has led to less-than-ideal educational outcomes.
That’s why, as a student from our Daoxianghu School mentioned, I place great emphasis on international exchanges and understanding. We integrate these concepts into our subjects, curriculum, and activities. From junior high to high school and elementary education, we focus on both local and international education. Now, in retirement, I manage Daoxianghu and Qinglanshan Schools, aiming to cultivate students with a foundation in local culture and national spirit, while also fostering a global perspective and international understanding. This is the future model for Chinese youth.
We provide experiential learning opportunities that are both locally and globally oriented. Teachers also undergo training in this area, shifting focus from exam-centric teaching to a more comprehensive educational approach. Thank you all!
The forum brought together over 400 participants. These included Li Xikui, Vice President of Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, Cheng Hong, Vice President of All-China Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese, Chen Xi, Mayor of the People’s Government of Sanya City, Arya Ali, First Lady of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, and Michael Houghton, Nobel Laureate in Physiology or Medicine, and ambassadors from Kyrgyzstan, Zambia, Maldives, Switzerland, Nepal, Guyana, Uganda, Mozambique, and various other countries.
2023 marks the tenth anniversary of the Belt and Road Initiative. The forum focused on women's education, health, and growth, upholding the spirit of the Silk Road, and promoting inter-civilizational exchanges. It vigorously publicized China's achievements in advancing women's causes and promoting their comprehensive development in the new era. This forum significantly enhanced China's international discourse and influence in the fields of women and children, building a platform and bridge for women's exchange and communication among Belt and Road participating countries
