The 5th Belt and Road Women’s Forum successfully convened in Sanya, Hainan from December 6-8. Co-hosted by the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, the All-China Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese, and the UN Resident Coordinator Office in China, and jointly organized by the People’s Government of Sanya City, the China Friendship Foundation for Peace and Development, and the Secretariat of the Belt and Road Women’s Forum. Gao Yi, Deputy General Manager of Bloomage Biotechnology Corporation Limited, attended the opening ceremony and delivered a speech.
Esteemed moderator, distinguished leaders, experts, ladies, and gentlemen, good afternoon!
It is a great honor to be invited to the 5th Belt and Road Women’s Forum. I am also privileged to represent Ms. Zhao Yan, Chairman of Bloomage Biotechnology, who entrusted me to share our perspective and insights into the fields of technology and female leadership. Before delving into a deeper discussion, allow me a few moments to introduce Bloomage Biotechnology.
Many of our domestic friends, upon hearing the name Bloomage Biotechnology, instantly think of products like BIOHYALUX and HILITE, spanning functional skincare, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and other consumer products. Bloomage Biotechnology is a biotech company specializing in the development of bioactive materials through synthetic biology.
Behind our well-known end products lies the support of over 900 research staff. Bloomage Biotechnology has 907 researchers, engaged in fundamental research to discover new substances, understand their mechanisms, and explore their relationships with the human body. Others are involved in applied basic research, transforming laboratory discoveries into familiar end products used in our daily lives.
In essence, our end products represent the backend of our operations, while our real focus is on the front end - the realms of science and technology. Our development of bioactive materials meets the demands for raw materials, functional skincare, food, and medical end products. This is how Bloomage Biotechnology, initially behind the scenes, emerged as a well-known public company.
The true service to our vast consumer base comes from these 900+ researchers, who embody Bloomage Biotechnology’s mission of ‘health, beauty, and happiness’ in households everywhere.
The foundation of all this beauty and innovation is synthetic biology. Chairman Yan Jiangying highlighted this field in her report. For example, Rhodiola, originally a unique Chinese herbal medicine, was traditionally consumed before visiting the Tibetan Plateau to counteract altitude sickness and enhance oxygen absorption. Previously, the active component, salidroside, was extracted from naturally grown Rhodiola, a challenging and low-yield process due to its rare habitat and extraction method.
Now, Bloomage Biotechnology’s researchers have sequenced the Rhodiola gene, identifying the segment responsible for producing salidroside. We’ve engineered brewing yeast to become mini biofactories, producing high-purity, stable salidroside through microbial fermentation, replacing traditional extraction methods. Similarly, our core product hyaluronic acid was traditionally extracted from rooster combs. Now, it’s produced using synthetic biology, contributing to green manufacturing, and addressing climate change.
Today’s critical theme is ‘She Power.’ Among Bloomage Biotechnology’s 907 researchers, 566 are women, making up 62.4% of our research team. Beyond research, in the realm of consumer goods, we see women's consumer power, especially in China, where women aged 20 to 60 wield a spending power of a staggering 10 trillion yuan. Chinese women have become a formidable force in the market, surpassing even our dear male counterparts.
Bloomage Biotechnology’s recent market achievements are, in part, due to our deep understanding and appreciation of female consumer power, both in terms of efficacy and emotional value. We aim to resonate deeply with the 10 trillion female consumer market, bringing vitality and effective products to the market.
In addition to technological and consumer power, female leadership is rising. Data from MSCI shows an increasing number of women leaders in listed companies. Today's forum, featuring numerous female experts, politicians, and leaders from various fields, is a testament to this growth and a source of pride and honor.
Like Bloomage Biotechnology, as we have discussed, women comprise 62.4% of our R&D staff. But looking at the company, women represent more than half of our workforce. In our executive and middle management teams, women are nearly half of the total. Bloomage Biotechnology is not just a proponent and driving force of the female economy; we are also practitioners of "Her Power."
Therefore, Bloomage Biotechnology continuously strives to excel in the beauty industry and exemplify ‘She Power.’ Being at a women’s forum today, I am delighted to see many leaders from government organizations and associations increasingly valuing female strength. I believe that as we collectively focus on women and their contributions in all aspects of society, and as women break through physical limits alongside advancements in technology and education, the power of women will become increasingly vital in societal progress. Thank you, everyone!

The theme of the forum, ‘She Power: Jointly Building and Sharing a Beautiful Life,’ reflects a focus on women’s unique contributions and empowerment within the context of the Belt and Road Initiative. Organized by the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, the All-China Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese, and the All-China Youth Federation, along with the People’s Government of Sanya City leadership, the forum brought together over 400 participants. These included the First Lady of Guyana, representatives from the United Nations, Nobel laureates in Physiology or Medicine, and ambassadors from Kyrgyzstan, Zambia, Maldives, Switzerland, Nepal, Guyana, Uganda, Mozambique, and various other countries, along with national and international business representatives.
During the forum, in-depth discussions and exchanges took place around the theme. Guests shared insights on the distinctive role played by women in the ten years since the Belt and Road Initiative was launched. They highlighted the substantial achievements of women and looked forward to the future of the initiative, advocating for women’s empowerment to foster common development and prosperity in human society.
2023 marks the tenth anniversary of the Belt and Road Initiative. Over the past decade, the Belt and Road Women’s Forum has been instrumental in showcasing the unique role of women in the development of the Belt and Road Initiative, promoting comprehensive and sustainable development for women, and enhancing people-to-people connections among the participating countries. The forum has successfully established a platform for communication and collaboration among women across the Belt and Road countries, building bridges for mutual understanding and cooperation.
