The 5th Belt and Road Women’s Forum successfully convened in Sanya, Hainan from December 6-8. Co-hosted by the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, the All-China Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese, and the UN Resident Coordinator Office in China, and jointly organized by the People’s Government of Sanya City, the China Friendship Foundation for Peace and Development, and the Secretariat of the Belt and Road Women’s Forum. Hello everyone!
I am honored to be invited to attend this forum. My topic for sharing is ‘Focusing on Family, Parenting, and Family Values to Build a Family-Friendly Society.’ The family, as the cell of society, plays a crucial role. Only with harmonious families, good parenting, and upright family values can children grow healthily, and society develop healthily.
The report of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China incorporated the construction of family, parenting, and family values into the report for the first time, highlighting the pivotal role of the family. Doing good family work is an important focus for the Women's Federation in serving the overall situation and women.
The Hebei Province Women’s Federation earnestly studies and implements President Xi Jinping’s important discussions on family, family values, and family education, and takes on the political responsibility of promoting the construction of family, family values, and family education. Our main focus is to continuously deepen the Happy and Healthy Family Project, the creation of beautiful courtyards, etc., leading families across the province to make families good, cultivate good parenting, pass on good family values, and promote a family-friendly society.
We persist in cultivating new-era families as the main line, advancing the new trend of socialist family civilization. We have carried out activities to find the most beautiful families and create green families. These activities are down-to-earth, gather popularity, and promote positive energy, to learn from the best and strive to be the best. We have 240,000 most beautiful families, including those who selflessly dedicated themselves to protecting forests and couples who have struggled together against cancer. One family’s story is particularly touching: the wife was diagnosed with cancer, and her husband, who holds a Ph.D. in management, accompanied her in the fight against cancer. He researched treatment plans and consulted with experts. He then wrote a book based on their cancer-fighting journey, ‘Life is So Beautiful’, which was sent to Zhong Nanshang, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and three other academicians after his wife recovered. The book, detailing their journey and offering advice to other patients, was highly appreciated.
We also have families of inheritors of intangible cultural heritage, like the Guo Mohan family, who are masters of the Chinese craft of metal painting. They have trained many African students, who have won major awards in their home countries. These families represent the spirit of facing the sun and holding the country close to their hearts. They practice good virtues, contributing to a positive family environment, and influencing many other families to cultivate a new era’s view of the nation, forming intimate and loving family relationships, and promoting upward and virtuous family values. This has led to the formation of good families, rustic, and social customs.
Secondly, we stick to the people-centered ideology and create beautiful courtyards, especially in rural areas. Through the ‘Five Beauties,’ we have initiated the creation of beautiful courtyards, an initiative that has been incorporated into the central government’s first document. This initiative has sparked a family revolution, leading to the creation of beautiful villages, and promoting comprehensive rural revitalization. It has driven a beautiful economy and jointly painted a harmonious rural canvas.
Thirdly, we adhere to the fundamental task of fostering character and cultivating people who can undertake the great task of national rejuvenation. The family is the first school of life. Our work has expanded children’s ideological and moral practices and promoted their all-around development. The country’s prosperity and the nation’s rejuvenation must always be reflected in the virtues of millions of families. Building a family-friendly society is a common aspiration and goal of the whole society. We will join hands to move forward, further focus on families, deepen research, respond to family needs, and contribute to building a family-friendly society.

The theme of the forum, ‘She Power: Jointly Building and Sharing a Beautiful Life,’ reflects a focus on women’s unique contributions and empowerment within the context of the Belt and Road Initiative. Organized by the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, the All-China Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese, and the All-China Youth Federation, along with the People’s Government of Sanya City leadership, the forum brought together over 400 participants. These included the First Lady of Guyana, representatives from the United Nations, Nobel laureates in Physiology or Medicine, and ambassadors from Kyrgyzstan, Zambia, Maldives, Switzerland, Nepal, Guyana, Uganda, Mozambique, and various other countries, along with national and international business representatives.
During the forum, in-depth discussions and exchanges took place around the theme. Guests shared insights on the distinctive role played by women in the ten years since the Belt and Road Initiative was launched. They highlighted the substantial achievements of women and looked forward to the future of the initiative, advocating for women’s empowerment to foster common development and prosperity in human society.
2023 marks the tenth anniversary of the Belt and Road Initiative. Over the past decade, the Belt and Road Women’s Forum has been instrumental in showcasing the unique role of women in the development of the Belt and Road Initiative, promoting comprehensive and sustainable development for women, and enhancing people-to-people connections among the participating countries. The forum has successfully established a platform for communication and collaboration among women across the Belt and Road countries, building bridges for mutual understanding and cooperation.
