The 5th Belt and Road Women’s Forum successfully convened in Sanya, Hainan from December 6-8. Co-hosted by the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, the All-China Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese, and the UN Resident Coordinator Office in China, and jointly organized by the People’s Government of Sanya City, the China Friendship Foundation for Peace and Development, and the Secretariat of the Belt and Road Women’s Forum. I am delighted to witness the grand opening of the 5th Belt and Road Women’s Forum in the beautiful city of Sanya. On behalf of the People’s Government of Sanya City, I extend a warm welcome to all the guests attending the forum and express my heartfelt gratitude to the organizing institutions for their trust and support. We are honored by your choice of Sanya. At this moment, Sanya is in its most beautiful season of the year, an ideal destination for relaxation and vacation for guests from China and abroad. Sanya, situated on the golden tourism coastline of 18 degrees north latitude, is blessed with picturesque scenery, blooming flowers throughout the year, and an average annual temperature of 25.7 degrees Celsius. The city, renowned for its sunshine, beaches, blue sky, and diverse tourism offerings, attracts numerous domestic and international visitors annually, making it a well-known tourist city both in China and abroad. As a strategic pivot city of the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road, located at the corridor connecting the Pacific and Indian Oceans, Sanya actively participates in and serves the construction of the Belt and Road Initiative. We are seizing the strategic opportunities of the Hainan Free Trade Port development, focusing on enhancing policy, infrastructure, trade, financial and people-to-people connectivity. Sanya has been engaging in various cultural, tourism, sports, science, and education exchange activities with cities from countries and regions along the Belt and Road. A series of significant meetings and activities have been successfully held here, continually expanding Sanya’s circle of friends, and establishing it as an important city for international exchange in southern China.
Sanya is a promising land for investment and entrepreneurship for friends from various countries. We are accelerating the construction of the Hainan Free Trade Port with various favorable policies continuously being introduced, bringing new development opportunities and infinite business potential to Sanya. We are deepening reform and opening-up, vigorously promoting a legal, international, and convenient business environment, setting benchmarks for the construction of the free trade port and transformation exemplars. We are accelerating the development of an international tourism destination and creating a free trade port science and innovation highland. Leveraging the unique advantages bestowed by nature in latitude and depth, we are undertaking national deep-sea science and technology and southern seed breeding as future industries, pushing forward high-quality economic and social development, and striving to compose the Sanya chapter of Chinese-style modernization.
The successful hosting of the 5th Belt and Road Women’s Forum not only allows us to share the successful experiences of the attendees in sci-technology, health, culture, and youth affairs but also to listen to valuable opinions and suggestions on sharing the policy dividends of the free trade port, participating in the development and construction of Sanya, and serving the construction of the Belt and Road. We warmly welcome all guests to visit and exchange in Sanya frequently and to enjoy leisure and vacation here.
We sincerely hope to utilize your international influence to promote multi-field and in-depth exchanges and cooperation between Sanya and the world, jointly committing to the global cooperative development and international exchange of women’s causes.

The theme of the forum, ‘She Power: Jointly Building and Sharing a Beautiful Life,’ reflects a focus on women’s unique contributions and empowerment within the context of the Belt and Road Initiative. Organized by the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, the All-China Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese, and the All-China Youth Federation, along with the People’s Government of Sanya City leadership, the forum brought together over 400 participants. These included the First Lady of Guyana, representatives from the United Nations, Nobel laureates in Physiology or Medicine, and ambassadors from Kyrgyzstan, Zambia, Maldives, Switzerland, Nepal, Guyana, Uganda, Mozambique, and various other countries, along with national and international business representatives.
During the forum, in-depth discussions and exchanges took place around the theme. Guests shared insights on the distinctive role played by women in the ten years since the Belt and Road Initiative was launched. They highlighted the substantial achievements of women and looked forward to the future of the initiative, advocating for women’s empowerment to foster common development and prosperity in human society.
2023 marks the tenth anniversary of the Belt and Road Initiative. Over the past decade, the Belt and Road Women’s Forum has been instrumental in showcasing the unique role of women in the development of the Belt and Road Initiative, promoting comprehensive and sustainable development for women, and enhancing people-to-people connections among the participating countries. The forum has successfully established a platform for communication and collaboration among women across the Belt and Road countries, building bridges for mutual understanding and cooperation.
